Interning
at the Council
Clean Air Council has been providing internship opportunities
to college and university students from both the local area
and from all over the country since 1967. It is a partnership
that provides interns with a valuable and fun, learning
experience while the Council benefits from the students'
hard work and dedication.
Interns perform a wide range of tasks including: research;
preparation of written materials such as reports, newsletters,
and fact sheets; community, educational, and media outreach;
and administrative work.
Interns are typically hired to work within a specific program
area (see below). Interns work closely with program managers
and are given a substantial amount of guidance. However,
independence is highly valued and interns are encouraged
to be creative and self-motivated.
Time Period
Summer Internships:
Summer internship positions typically run for three
months, from June through August. Interns typically work
35 hours per week. There is some flexibility in terms of
internship lengths, depending upon a student's particular
schedule. The Council's office hours are Monday through
Friday, 9 am until 5 pm.
Semester Internships:
Internships during the school year are flexible and
take into account a student's schedule. Students are encouraged
to intern at least 10 hours per week in order to maximize
their learning experience. The Council's office hours are
Monday through Friday, 9 am until 5 pm. Non-students are
also welcome to intern throughout the year. Schedules can
be made to accommodate the individuals availability.
Compensation
Interns are normally hired on a volunteer, for credit, or
federal work study basis. A limited number of paid internships
may also be available, depending upon available funding
or a particular candidate's experience. Federal work study
students are strongly encouraged to apply- the Council is
often willing to pay students through federal work study
funds upon being awarded to the student from the federal
government. Students are encouraged to visit their college
or university employment or off-campus work study center
if they are unsure as to their federal work study status.
Interns that volunteer their time will be compensated for
travel expenses to and from the Council (as long as commutes
are made via public transit).
