Recycle
NOW Philly!
Even though it was the first
city in the nation to pass a mandatory recycling
law, only 8% of Philadelphia's solid waste is currently
being recycled. The city could easily increase
its recycling rate to 35 or 40%, a step that would
save taxpayers $17 million a year. Take
action now by visiting the RecycleNOW Philadelphia Campaign website! Clean Air
Council is on the Steering Committee for the RecycleNOW Philadelphia Campaign and is a founding member
of the Recycling
Alliance of Philadelphia.
The problem: Americans produce too much solid waste.
- The average American produces 4.6 pounds of trash per day (more than 230 million tons per year).
- Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.
- Almost one-third of the waste generated in America is packaging.
Our waste, from paper and soda cans to old refrigerators and television sets, ends up either buried in landfills or burnt in incinerators if it is not re-used or recycled. Landfills and incinerators threaten public health and pollute the air.
The solution: We can solve America's waste problem if we:
Reduce, because the best way to manage waste is not to produce it at all.
Reuse, because this keeps goods out of landfills and incinerators and reduces the need for raw materials to make new goods.
Recycle, because its what YOU can do everyday to protect the environment. Recycling saves energy and conserves natural resources.
Clean Air Council is also part of the solution!
The Council's waste reduction and recycling program has been at the forefront of the waste reduction and recycling movement in Philadelphia since the late 1980's. The Council works to reduce waste and promote recycling throughout the state.
