The Hub 7/29/16: Clean Air Council’s Weekly Round-up of Transportation News

“The Hub” is a weekly round-up of transportation related news in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Check back weekly to keep up to date on the issues Clean Air Council’s transportation staff finds important.

Philadelphia Magazine: Dept. of minor miracles: nobody is parked on the Broad Street median today – Philly enforced the ban on median parking on South Broad. Not only were most cars removed, but the street was far safer for all road users.  Now many are calling for continued enforcement after the DNC.

Keystone Crossroads: Ideas worth stealing: trading parking requirements for more mobility choices – Off-street parking requirements increase housing costs and induce more driving. TransForm has been working with developers in California to swap parking with mobility option suites like discounted transit passes, on-site car-sharing service, indoor and outdoor bike parking and grocery carts for every unit.

CityLab: Where the sidewalk funding ends – Placing the responsibility of pedestrian infrastructure repair on homeowners and business owners, while automobile facilities are subsidized and maintained by municipalities or the state, is another example of how walkability is neglected in the U.S.

Mashable: The hardcore teen bike messengers of the early 1900s – Ever wonder what it was like to be a cyclist in the early 20th century? Then check out these photographs of child bike messengers by Lewis Hine, a New York sociologist and photographer who documented child laborers across the South.
