The Hub 8/26/16: Clean Air Council’s Weekly Round-up of Transportation News

“The Hub” is a weekly round-up of transportation related news in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Check back weekly to keep up to date on the issues Clean Air Council’s transportation staff finds important.

Philly Voice: How Philly could ‘drastically’ reduce poverty – Transportation is the third biggest cost for low-income Americans. If Philadelphia focuses on creating jobs that are easily accessible by an affordable form of transportation, that can have a dramatic effect on reducing poverty.

Grist: Police are finally catching cars that veer too close to bicyclists – 11 cities are utilizing this sonar device that measures the distance between a bike’s handlebars and a passing car, but that only helps so much. Increased cycling infrastructure and public education need to be combined with enforcement in order to make streets safer for all road users.

Chicago Tribune: Traffic deaths are on the rise as distracted drivers roam the roads – In 2015, traffic deaths nationwide increased by 8%. That is the largest year-to-year increase in 50 years. Distracted driving, higher speed limits, and an increase in the number of miles driven are to blame. Much like attitudes on drunk driving, distracted driving needs to become socially unacceptable for fatalities to decrease.

Bloomberg: Uber’s first self-driving fleet arrives in Pittsburgh this month – Pittsburghers will be able to summon the first self-driving car-sharing service. For now, the cars will be supervised by a human.

Greater Greater Washington: College Park recreated Paris’ “bus stop of the future” on the cheap – A bus stop’s design and accessibly is not often taken into consideration. See how Paris and College Park have redesigned bus stops to include amenities, like a bikeshare station, a mini library, wifi and a tire pump.
