Support the Clean Energy Incentive Program

The Clean Power Plan (CPP) is a milestone public health standard that will finally limit carbon dioxide pollution from existing power plants. Unfortunately, power plants and pollution are not distributed equally. Disadvantaged communities are disproportionately exposed to the impacts of climate change and dangerous air pollution. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently taking comment on one part of the CPP, the Clean Energy Incentive Program (CEIP). The CEIP will incentivize energy efficiency in low-income areas: saving money, creating jobs and protecting public health.

Please send this message to the EPA and your federal elected officials, urging the EPA to finalize a strong CEIP while raising awareness locally to ensure early participation. All of Pennsylvania’s 7 coal plants and its 14 waste-coal power plants are in areas where at least 20% of the nearby population lives under the federal poverty line. The CEIP will offer a 2-1 match for every megawatt-hour of electricity saved by efficiency efforts in low-income areas. Efficiency companies can then sell the Emission Reduction Credits generated to polluters, bringing much needed economic stimulus to some of the most polluted and underserved regions of Pennsylvania.
