Clean Air Council is happy to promote an innovative new tool for ports to cross check common port operations with regulatory requirements. This tool emphases environmental, land-based, regulatory issues facing port tenants and authorities, and was developed by EPA Region II and a port industry focus group.
www.portcompliance.orgThe marine ports in the Philadelphia area are major hubs of economic activity and are vital to the local economy. By volume, the Philadelphia ports combine to make the Philadelphia Port System the second largest port in the North Atlantic. Each year, port facilities along the Delaware River handle tons of goods from around the world, supplying a wide variety of consumer and manufactured goods for the region and jobs and revenue for the community. Working with local port operators, the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority, the City of Philadelphia Water Department, community-groups from port neighborhoods, and other port-stakeholders, Clean Air Council is leading an educational outreach program with the goal of addressing environmental issues in land, air, and water at Philadelphia ports. Recent studies have shown that in response to an increase in global shipping, U.S port activity and construction efforts have grown exponentially. While expanded activity has increased the economic importance of ports, it has also created an increased potential for activities that pollute nearby water resources, as well as the air and land around ports. Against this background of economic growth and increased opportunities for pollution, there has never been a more urgent need to address the environmental impact of port activities.
