THE Impact Project: Rail Issue Brief
This brief [from THE Impact Project, one of the first organizations to address the health impacts of goods movement] looks at the role of rail yards in the “goods movement system,” especially at how shipping containers that arrive at a marine port travel to local rail yards by truck and then are transferred to trains for travel to their final destinations elsewhere in the country. The brief examines health and community impacts from rail yards that are located in close proximity to homes, schools, and other sensitive receptors. The brief also draws upon advocacy efforts by environmental justice and health organizations to suggest how rail yards can be better regulated to reduce harmful impacts.
