The Hub 6/16/17: Clean Air Council’s Weekly Round-up of Transportation News

“The Hub” is a weekly round-up of transportation related news in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Check back weekly to keep up to date on the issues Clean Air Council’s transportation staff finds important.

Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia: Remembering Transportation Advocate Peter Javsicas  – Javsicas died of injuries that were the result of a minivan jumping the curbed and striking him at 16th St. and JFK Blvd, one of the top 10 most dangerous intersections in Philadelphia. Pedestrian fatalities are not inevitable, they are preventable. Please sign the petition calling on Councilman Darrell Clarke to implement traffic calming measures on JFK Blvd. and Market St. and send personal stories about your experiences on these streets, and desire for improved safety to feetfirstphilly@cleanair.org.

Clean Air Council: Clean Air Council awarded with Azavea Summer of Maps Fellow – Secure and convenient bike parking provides access to jobs, services, and shopping. In Philadelphia, the availability of secure and convenient bicycle has not kept up with demand. The Azavea Summer of Maps fellow will help Clean Air Council visualize bike parking demand and how to meet it.

SFGate: Uber, Lyft cars have heavy impact on SF streets, study finds – Another study finds that rideshare services, like Uber and Lyft, are contributing to traffic congestion, not relieving it.

The Huffington Post: The rise of autonomous cars may mean the fall of ridesharers – With policymakers clearing the road for fully autonomous vehicles,  think tank RethinkX estimates that, within 10 years, 95% of U.S. passenger miles traveled will be logged by fleets of on-demand autonomous electric vehicles, rather than individually owned cars.

CityLab: The end of diesel – Diesel contributed to Paris briefly becoming the most polluted city in the world, surpassing famously smoggy Beijing.
