International Railway Journal: First phase of Abuja light rail opensNigeria is set to surpass the United States in population by 2050, and the growing urban population has long needed a more efficient way to get around the capital city of Abuja. A 45.2 km light rail line opened last week, creating upward mobility for many metro residents.

 

Mobility Lab: Bikeshare has an equity problem, and Philadelphia is tackling it – A vast majority of bikeshare users are affluent white folks. Indego, Philadelphia’s bike share, wants to make bike share work for those who could benefit from it most. Adult riding classes, low income passes, cash payment options, and targeted station placement are just a few of the strategies being employed to build a more equitable bike share system that truly serves this beautifully diverse city.

 

CityLab: The Surprising Fortunes of a Metro Expansion – Amsterdam’s ambitious Noord/Zuidlijn metro line was constructed 65 feet below the city, crossing below a river that has been used as a shipping route for centuries. The archeological finds during construction include objects from as far back as 119,000 years ago. One of the new metro stations will feature a display of all the objects found during construction.

 

StreetsBlog: Senators Want to Sneak Safety Exemptions for Self-Driving Cars Into Law –  The Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill is considered a “must pass” piece of legislation. AV Start, a controversial bill that would rapidly advance autonomous vehicle testing, was folded into the “must pass” legislation. AV Start would exempt autonomous vehicles from many safety restrictions that regular vehicles are subject to.
