Ask DEP to adopt a more stringent air pollution rule including closing oil and gas industry loopholes.

Governor Wolf should adopt a strong rule that cuts methane pollution from oil and gas operations which is critical for meeting the state’s climate goals and addressing the climate crisis. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is responsible for 25 percent of the climate change we’re already experiencing worldwide. Cutting methane pollution that leaks from the oil and gas industry is the quickest, most cost-effective way for Pennsylvania to reduce climate-warming greenhouse gases.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently announced a public comment period for a proposed rule to reduce methane and harmful air pollution from existing oil and gas operations. This offers an important opportunity for Pennsylvania residents to voice their opinions and call for a strong final rule that closes oil and gas industry loopholes. A strong final rule is needed to cut methane and harmful volatile organic compounds from oil and gas infrastructure. Unfortunately, the rule also includes loopholes such as one for low-producing wells that are responsible for about half of all methane pollution in the state.
