Call Governor Wolf to Demand Pennsylvania Cut Shale Gas Air Pollution
We are quickly running out of time to cut greenhouse gas emissions to avoid catastrophic climate change. One way to do this in Pennsylvania is to dramatically reduce methane, a very potent greenhouse gas, from the shale gas industry. Methane poses a grave danger to our planet. It has over 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide, making it a major driver of climate change. Peer-reviewed studies have consistently shown that methane emissions from Pennsylvania’s gas industry are on the rise.
Governor Tom Wolf recently signed an executive order setting goals of reducing Pennsylvania’s greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050 (compared to 2005 levels). While this is a commendable goal, the concrete steps taken to achieve this goal will make all the difference. Cutting methane pollution from the natural gas industry must be a central part of achieving Governor Wolf’s climate goals.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently proposed a draft rule to limit air pollution from the tens of thousands of existing natural gas facilities in Pennsylvania. DEP must strengthen this rule in order to reduce methane pollution from as many natural gas operations as possible. Fill out the form below to call Governor Wolf and ask him to make his air pollution rule as comprehensive as possible.
As the air pollution engineer who administered the ozone program and wrote the volatile organic compound regulations for Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1983, I urge you to adopt these methane rules to control this potent greenhouse gas. Thank you.
Good Afternoon, Governor Wolf, I am asking you to make the rules for methane gas pollution levels in the atmosphere as comprehensive as possible, with acceptable levels as low as possible. Thank you.
