“Feed the Barrel” at Greenfest Philly

Have you ever had to call the plumber because your frying oil clogged the drain pipes? Have you ever snuck a bit of used oil down the kitchen drain? Did you know that there is a better way to get rid of used cooking oil than dumping it out in the backyard?

Feed the Barrel wants you to know that your used cooking oil is actually recyclable!

The movement started when mothers in their Indonesian community were confused when they had to call their plumbers for clogged drains because, as it turns out, you’re not supposed to flush cooking oil down the drain! Feed the Barrel contacted the U.S Environmental Protection Agency to look for ways to fix the problem and partnered with Eden Green Energy to solve the issue of safe oil disposal.

To promote waste oil recycling in the community Feed the Barrel places barrels in community centers, churches and small restaurants where anyone can bring their oil and “Feed the Barrel.” Barrel supplier, Eden Green Energy, picks up the waste oil and brings it to a facility to be turned into biofuel, compost and soap. By feeding the barrels, you keep sewer mains unclogged, reduce waste in landfills and waterways, and give a what would otherwise be a waste product another (pretty fantastic) life.

Recycling waste oil is extremely easy. Join the movement and start recycling waste oil at Greenfest Philly. Feed the Barrel will have collection barrels at the festival. They ask everyone coming to Greenfest to start collecting used cooking oil, bring it to the festival and feed the barrel! Once you feed a barrel, you are an official Barrel Feeder- it’s a good feeling.

Save your used cooking oil to “Feed the Barrel” at Greenfest Philly on Sunday, September 10th and help Philadelphia become a Zero Waste city.

  1. I was wondering if the Feed The Barrel program still exists in South Philadelphia. About two years ago I brought a container of used cooking/packing oil to a location called Hani’s garden, which was located in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia. I now have another large container of used oil and need to get rid of it. Thank you very much for your time and for having read this inquiry.
