Joe’s Corner
Our nation and nations across the world are facing a public health emergency of international concern that is disrupting the lives of millions of people. The well being of Clean Air Council staff and our members is my number one priority, and as Executive Director, I’ve taken the necessary steps to protect the Council staff and to follow all CDC guidelines as we brace for what could be an extended period of isolation.
The entire Council staff is working remotely, and our in person events have been postponed or changed to virtual events like the virtual Run For Clean Air. I am so proud how well the Council staff has risen to the challenge. They have even managed to teach this old man how to use Slack, GoToMeeting and other electronic ways to stay connected. Fortunately the Council has not had to lay off any staff and is appreciative of the concern and support it has received from its funders and supporters.
As a nation we have had to change our lives to protect ourselves and our loved ones from COVID-19. But the Council staff is fully committed to our mission to defend your right to breathe clean air and live in a healthy environment Even as we work remotely, the Council continues to ensure that industry meets its legal and moral obligation to follow the law. The Council has not slowed down in its work holding local, state and federal government agencies accountable for fulfilling their obligation to enforce those laws.
I was truly disgusted to read about the U.S. EPA’s opportunistic move to lessen enforcement of environmental laws during this public health emergency. It’s not only shameful, but it is morally wrong to use this public health emergency as a way to lessen environmental protections and allow more pollution to go unchecked from industry across the state and the nation. The Council is fully prepared to litigate the issue if need be.
The Council is dedicated to protecting your right to a healthy environment, no matter what the circumstance or world condition may be. We will be back in our office once the spread of this virus is contained. Until then, be assured that we will continue to keep the maximum amount of pressure on industry polluters. Stay safe, and make sure you practice social distancing during this historic time.
