Flashback, the year is 1981 and a local environmental organization holds the first ever Run for Clean Air. The event attracted 100 participants running 5 miles along Forbidden Drive in Wissahickon Valley Park to support the environment. Fast forward to 2021 and the very same organization, Clean Air Council, is holding its 40th annual Run for Clean Air!
The Run for Clean Air is now the region’s largest Earth Day celebration, and attracts thousands of runners annually. Runners from all over the Philadelphia region and beyond come together to celebrate Earth Day and another year of protecting our environment.

Just like last year, to protect runners’ health and safety during the pandemic, the Run for Clean Air will be entirely virtual giving runners the freedom and flexibility to run 5k and 10k distances when and where they choose. All virtual runners and walkers will receive a race shirt and finisher medal. To continue our proud tradition of providing finisher medals with a functional use beyond just being a medal, we’re excited to offer the first ever Run for Clean Air bluetooth speaker medal! Runners can choose to either have their race swag mailed to them, or they can pick them up safely in person at our Rittenhouse Square office.
A myriad of exciting content, resources, and contests will keep runners busy all through April leading up to the event, including a live results broadcast on race day, Saturday April 17th. Follow us at facebook.com/runforcleanair to stay up to date on all the fun activities.
No matter where you run or walk this year, join thousands of people putting their best foot forward and supporting the environment this Earth Day with the Virtual Run for Clean Air! Click here to register.

Since 1981, Clean Air Council has held the Run for Clean Air in Philadelphia to celebrate Earth Day. 11 years earlier, Clean Air Council hosted the Philadelphia event for the first ever Earth Day in 1970. Over the years, the Run for Clean Air is one of the region’s longest-running charity races and its largest Earth Day event.
We’re proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this year at the Run for Clean Air presented by Toyota Hybrids as a virtual race.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
(1) Register for the race online (just choose the Virtual 5K, 10K or 3K walk).
(2) Prepare for the race by training for your race and post to social media because if people don’t know about your Run for Clean Air training runs, did they even happen?
(3) Now it’s time to Run for Clean Air! Fire up your favorite running app and hit the street, trail, track, or treadmill. We HIGHLY encourage our runners to run their race during Earth Week, from April 18th to the 26th.
(4) Submit your time through the Run for Clean Air RunSignUp page between April 18th and May 1st.
(5) Get your medal and shirt! We hope that by early May we can set up a pickup day at the Clean Air Council office or we can mail them right to you!
***Don’t forget to tell friends and family about the region’s biggest Earth Day Race. Post before, during, and after your virtual race to spread the word and make the biggest impact this Earth Day.
