The New York Times: Remote Work Is Devastating New York City’s Commuter RailsBefore the pandemic over a million workers commuted into New York daily, but transit declined over 50% in 2021. The pandemic allowed many employees to work virtually thus eliminating the need to commute. 

The Transport Politic: Transit Expansion Openings And Construction Planned for 2022 After numerous delays due to the pandemic, multiple transit construction are expected to start this year (2022) across the globe. These include transit systems across North America, Africa, and countries in Western Europe. There are 22 new projects expected to be open in the United States.

StreetsBlog USA: Pop-up Bike Lanes Increase Cycling Trips Up To 48% A recent study in Europe showed that cycling trips increased by 48% due to the installation of pop-up bike lanes during the pandemic. Data showed that cities with more protected bike lanes experienced a greater increase in ridership.

CityLab: Traffic Deaths Spike, U.S Pledges New Safety Strategy Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced on Thursday a new plan to address the spike in traffic fatalities called ‘The National Roadway Safety Strategy’. In the first half of 2021, there was an 18.4% increase in traffic fatalities, which is the largest increase on record. Traffic deaths are avoidable.

The Salt Lake Tribune: All UTA Fares Are Free For The Month Of FebruaryUtah Transit Authority (UTA) announced fare-free transit for February in order to improve air quality and reduce vehicle emissions. Fare-Free February extends to all UTA bus and rail services. Many local entities are supporting Fare-Free February.
