“The Hub” is a weekly round-up of transportation related news in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Check back weekly to keep up-to-date on the issues Clean Air Council’s transportation staff finds important.

Clean Air Council’s pedestrian advocacy group, Feet First Philly, launched the second round of their public space enhancement mini-grant program. Everyone is encouraged to apply and enhance a public space of their choice. Applications are due on 11/8 by 11:59 pm.

StreetsBlog USA: Managing Our Streets Better Can Reduce Inequities COVID-19 has generated massive changes in our streets such as redesigns for increased bicycle traffic, slow streets, and also restaurant parklets for outdoor dining. But cities can implement tools such as policy and programs to reduce inequities and improve safety.

The Inquirer: Philadelphia School District Braces For Possible SEPTA StrikeThere is a possible SEPTA strike on November 1st as buses, subways, and trolleys halt services. In anticipation of this strike, the school district may need to shift to online learning.

Bloomberg: Washington Subway DerailmentInvestigators are urging transit systems to conduct urgent inspections on similar equipment like that of the Washington D.C area subway train that derailed due to a flaw with the wheel. The wheels move apart from each other along the axle in the series 7000 cars. 

Plan Philly: Philly Hiring Unarmed Traffic Officers This Month A new class of unsworn and unarmed civilian officers will be hired this month to maintain traffic safety in the city. The job position was posted on October 18th but officers are not expected to be on the streets until January 2022 at the earliest. 

PhillyVoice: Lighting To Be Installed On Manayunk Bridge Trail A $1.5 million project will install light along the Manayunk Bridge Trail by early 2022. This will create 24/7 access for both pedestrians and cyclists. The lighting is expected to be installed over the 0.6-mile span that connects Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township.
