“The Hub” is a weekly round-up of transportation related news in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Check back weekly to keep up-to-date on the issues Clean Air Council’s transportation staff finds important.

Clean Air Council’s pedestrian advocacy group, Feet First Philly, launched the second round of their public space enhancement mini-grant program. Everyone is encouraged to apply and enhance a public space of their choice. Applications are due on 11/8 by 11:59 pm.

Plan Philly: Foot Traffic Returns To Pre-pandemic Levels During the pandemic Philadelphia sidewalks were empty, but people are returning and pedestrian traffic are back to pre-pandemic levels in some areas. Stores see an increase in business with the return of pedestrians. 

WHYY: SEPTA Releases Guide For Riders In Case of Strike The contract between SEPTA and the transit union expires at midnight on October 31st, but workers are planning to strike if negotiations do not go as expected. SEPTA released a guide that offers important service information and alternative travel trips for commuters. 

Plan Philly: Mutual Aid For Riders, Bikes, And More With the possibility of a SEPTA strike, transit riders are seeking alternative modes of transportation. Various bike shops are providing discounted or free services for customers and commuters with SEPTA Key Card. Other organizations are implementing plans to provide assistance to commuters.

CBS Philly: SEPTA Reaches Tentative Agreement In an early Friday morning development, it was announced that SEPTA and TWU Local 234 made a tentative agreement on a new contract. This will avoid the possible strike next week and the new deal includes a 3% annual wage increase along with other incentives.

Mass Transit: New Look For Downtown Houston Transit Lanes Due to a partnership between the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County and the city of Huston, the transit-only lanes in the central business district are getting a new look. This is a safety project and includes new markings, striping, and signage.
