The Inquirer: Pedestrian Space Is A Public Health Issue – The Pavilion, a new Penn Medicine Hospital in West Philadelphia’s hospital district recently opened its doors. Original designs plans of the construction were to create a more pedestrian-friendly hospital campus, but this plan is not what occurred at completion.
CityLab: Like Basic Income, But For Transportation – Several experimental programs aim to close the gap between job opportunities and access to transportation. Cities across the country are launching year-long studies with selected participants to provide free access to public transit and other shared mobility services and to learn how this impacts their lives.
The Inquirer: 7 Ways To Rebuild Philly With The New Infrastructure Bill – The new infrastructure bill contains funding for black and brown communities that were divided by highways, public transportation, and electric vehicles. There are many ways that Philadelphia can use this funding such as rethinking SEPTA, developing the 30th Street Station, and even to “activate the 77 miles of abandoned or underutilized rail beds across Philadelphia”.
PlanPhilly: Indego Is Expanding, Again – Philly’s bike-share program aims to double in size within the next 5 years (by 2026). Indego launched its 2022 Expansion Plan, which has over 25 new stations and 300 new e-bikes.
WHYY: Philly Chooses Design Workshop to ‘Reimagine’ Ben Franklin Parkway – The City of Philadelphia chose the landscape and urban planning firm Design Workshop to redesign the Ben Franklin Parkway. The goal of this redesign is to make the parkway more attractive to pedestrians and cyclists. Design Workshop will begin public engagement early next year.
