Plan Philly: City To Apply For Funds To Cap Portion Of Vine Street Expressway Through Chinatown – Philadelphia is taking steps to help right historic inequities by applying for funds through the Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program. The application will be done in partnership with the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation. Funds will be used to develop the final concept for capping Vine Street Expressway between 9th and Broad Streets.
The Inquirer: An Outdated Parking Rule In Pa. Law Threatens The Safest Kind Of Bike Lanes – According to a study, parking-protected bike lanes are the safer than other standard bike lanes because they reduce car speeds and physically protect cyclists. Pennsylvania has historically barred parking separated bike lanes on state roads. The current law requires vehicles to be parked within 12 inches of the curb. Bicycle advocates hope that the State Senate will pass HB140 to allow parking-protected lanes going forward.
Momentum: Yes, Survey Finds Bicycles Are The Most Popular Form Of Transportation – Based on a survey done in over 28 countries, cycling in urban areas is dangerous, but with safer infrastructure more people will engage in biking. Currently, in the United States only 5% of the population bikes for daily needs. Globally, cycling is more popular than other forms of transportation.
Transfers Magazine: When It Comes To E-Bikes, Seeing Is Believing – Electric-assisted bicycles or E-bikes require less physical energy and are great for replacing driving trips, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. In order to maximize the environmental benefits of E-bikes, more people need to be exposed to them along with increasing the availability and affordability of these bikes across the country.
TRIBLIVE: Port Authority Rebrands To Pittsburgh Regional Transit – The Port Authority of Allegheny County rebrands after 60 years to Pittsburgh Regional Transit. There will be changes to the transit system which include a more consistent color scheme, teal and yellow.
