The Inquirer: PPA began cracking down on sidewalk parking and five other offenses. The results are in, there’s plenty of bad behavior. – From May 13th through June 26th, the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) launched a trial period to crack down on six mobility-related parking violations. During this time PPA officers wrote 25,797 tickets citywide which increased from 10,124 during the same time period last year. Sidewalk parking was the highest recorded violation, and overall parking violations are more prevalent in denser areas such as Fishtown, North Philadelphia, and South Philadelphia.
Metro Philadelphia: SEPTA Board approves $2.6 billion budget – SEPTA’s board approved the Operating and Capital budget proposal for fiscal year 2025. This approved budget assumes the passage of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s transit funding proposal which would invest an additional $283 million annually for statewide transit services. SEPTA’s proposed operating budget of $1.74 billion doubles the funding for SEPTA’s safe, clean, and secure initiatives from 2022, and provides a total of $72 million allowing the agency to hire more police officers, safety professionals, and cleaners.
The Inquirer: Another pedestrian has died after being struck by a car on Broad Street – North Broad Street is one of the most dangerous roadways in Philadelphia and between 2018 and 2022 169 people were killed or seriously injured on the roadway. Recently, a pedestrian was killed while crossing from the east side to the west side of North Broad Street at Fairmount Avenue. The city plans to install speed cameras along the length of Broad Street to reduce crashes and slow vehicle speeds.
