Climate and Energy
To avoid the worst effects of climate change, it is critical that we quickly stop using fossil fuels to make energy, heat our homes and buildings, move around, and power industrial processes. The Council works to watchdog fossil fuel power plants, promote clean energy, and advance strong climate policies.
Power Plants
Fossil fuel power plants are large industrial facilities that burn coal, oil, or gas to generate electricity. There is an increasing number of gas-fired power plants operating or being proposed in Pennsylvania. Clean Air Council calls for a rapid transition away from using fossil fuels to create electricity and advocates for policies that address health and climate concerns from these facilities right now. The Council also supports communities in addressing their concerns about proposed power plants and takes legal action against unlawful permits.
Clean Energy
The world’s top climate scientists have told us that we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero in the next few decades to avoid the worst effects of climate change. This goal requires a speedy transition to renewable energy sources supported by conserving energy and using it more efficiently. The Council is working hard to make sure that wind, solar, and other renewables can flourish in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware while also calling for strong energy efficiency policies.
Climate Policy
The climate crisis is accelerating and intensifying. Clean Air Council urges sweeping policy efforts at the local, state, and federal levels to dramatically cut greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution by 2030 to maintain the possibility of avoiding the worst impacts of climate change. This will provide a pathway to net-zero emissions by mid-century. To meet our promised climate targets, fossil fuels need strict regulatory controls and must be deliberately phased out with careful planning as quickly as possible.
