Some of the Council’s 2019 Achievements

  • Forcing Pennsylvania to better monitor the impacts of natural gas expansion on local ecology.

  • Submitted cap and trade petition to the Environmental Quality Board that addresses greenhouse gas emissions economy-wide.

  • Won a lawsuit appealing an air pollution permit for the Mariner East pipeline terminal in Marcus Hook, where the judge found Energy Transfer Partners (formerly known as Sunoco) had illegally evaded pollution restrictions.

  • Forced the State to develop significantly more protective rules on pipeline construction.

  • Forced Sunoco to allow public input into the old Sunoco refinery remediation project at Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) refinery site.

  • Took a leadership role in coordinating a broad community vision on how the old refinery site could be used for economic development, protecting local neighborhoods and recreation at the site of the PES refinery.

  • When the PES refinery exploded, the Council got the US. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board to quickly investigate.

  • Thanks to CAC’s cap and trade proposal, Governor Wolf adopted the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative in Pennsylvania which regulates the power sector.

  • Convinced the Wolf administration to propose a rule to reduce methane pollution from existing natural gas operations.

  • Successfully pushed the Wolf administration to address methane pollution from existing natural gas operations.

  • Created a neighborhood group in Clairton, Pennsylvania to reduce pollution from the coke-works facility there.

  • Through the Council’s Southwest PA Neighbors for Clean Air initiative, organizers trained and activated 50 neighborhood-based groups for a total of 500 new clean air advocates in Southwest Pennsylvania.

  • Involved 83 businesses and non-profits and 617 people participating in the month long Cycle September competition preventing the emissions of almost 19,000 pounds of CO2.

  • Worked with the City of Philadelphia and local merchants to install 100 bike racks.

  • Construction has started on the Cobbs Creek Connector Trail which will provide a much-needed link to the East Coast Greenway.

  • Achieved 1,500 downloads of the Go Philly Go Android App enabling users to reach destinations throughout the Philadelphia region on a combination of walking, biking and public transportation.

  • Since the start of 2015, GoPhillyGo has reached more than 50,000 individual users, and over 150,000 page views.

  • Pushed Pennsylvania to advocate for the adoption of the Transportation Climate Initiative which would regulate emissions from the transportation sector.

  • Championed better implementation of several state legislative priorities for Vision Zero which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries.

  • Introduced an anti-plastic bag bill to Philadelphia’s City Council that will drastically reduce the amount of plastic waste in Philadelphia.

  • Completed a two-year citizen air monitoring project in the Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington, creating a permanent network of 8 eye-level air monitors on homes, businesses, and organizations. Council also secured funding to expand this network with 5 additional air monitors in North Philadelphia and 50 new monitors in the state of Delaware.

  • Wrote and facilitated comments against Elcon Recycling’s proposed hazardous waste burner on the Delaware River in Southern Bucks County. With Clean Air Council’s support, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has denied Elcon’s current waste application.

  • CAC assisted Delaware County to pass a resolution that designates their parks tobacco and vape free. The initiative protects its 562,000 residents from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
