New Cobbs Creek Trail Segment Now Open
Clean Air Council is excited to announce the completion of a new .6 mile segment of the Cobbs Creek Connector Trail. The complete Cobbs Creek Trail now runs along the entirety of Cobbs Creek Park in West and Southwest Philadelphia. This is the first of several new trail segments opening over the next few years, spanning another 3 miles to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge.
The Cobbs Creek Connector Trail is part of the Circuit Trails (the regional trail network) and the East Coast Greenway (a 2,000+ mile route connecting cities along the East Coast), and serves as a valuable greenspace and transportation corridor for pedestrians and cyclists in West and Southwest Philadelphia. Completing this segment was not easy and required a physical barrier between the roadway and trail through a particularly tight rail underpass along Cobbs Creek Parkway. The new design also slows traffic by narrowing lanes and using rumble strips.
Cobbs Creek Park is a crucial greenspace in densely populated West and Southwest Philadelphia. The trail connects these neighborhoods and provides a safe route for exercise, recreation, and commuting to work. The Council worked with the City of Philadelphia for over 10 years to get this project underway and now pedestrians and cyclists can travel safely through this area. Momentum is building to continue making progress toward completion of the rest of the trail, and the Council continues to be a guiding voice in this project.
