Throughout the month of May, National Bike Month, Clean Air Council’s Cleaner Commute Philadelphia program will be helping you get ready for your bike commute. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter @GoPhillyGo and @CleanAirCouncil, so that you can get started on biking in one of the most popular bike commuting cities in America.

10 Tips for First Time Bike Commuters

  1. Check your bike – Make sure the chain is clean, there is air in the tires, the brakes are working properly, and there is a front white light and rear red reflector.
  2. Plan your route – GoPhillyGo.org is a website that was developed specifically for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users to plan multimodal trips in the Philadelphia region.
  3. Practice your route – Try it out on the weekend with less traffic so that you are confident!
  4. Plan ahead – If your work has a business professional dress code, bring your work clothes earlier in the week or pack a backpack
  5. Know the rules of the road – You can read Philadelphia’s rules and regulations around biking here.
  6. Bring a lock in case your office doesn’t have bike storage space.
  7. Use a rear red light – Highly encouraged for riding at night because it will help increase your visibility.
  8. Combine transit – Shorten your bike ride by combining cycling with public transit, check out GoPhillyGo’s tips and tricks on multimodal transportation.
  9. Check the forecast – and plan accordingly.
  10. Have fun!
