Clean Air Council: May is Bike Month and You Could Win Prizes! For the whole month of May, Clean Air Council is giving away prizes to cyclists who play Bike Month Bingo and participate in our weekly social media challenges. Our Bike Month Blog includes a checklist to ensure your bike is road (or trail) ready as well as tips for social distancing for safe cycling.

 

PlanPhilly: SEPTA wants to drop transfer fee and offer $1 fare for kids starting July 1 SEPTA’s planned fare restructuring will partially be enacted July 1, 2020. The transfer fee will be dropped, discounted fares for children will be enacted, and a three day transpass will be introduced. The planned fare increase however, is postponed until at least January 1, 2021.

 

ABC News: New York City breaks record: 58 straight days with no pedestrian deaths While the global pandemic has created tragedy across the globe, the decrease in driving has also led to a decrease in pedestrian deaths in New York City. 

 

Streets Blog: Speeding Isn’t the Only Dangerous Driving Behavior On the Rise During COVID-19With less cars on the road, dangerous driving behavior is on the rise across the US. Data from Zendrive shows cell phone usage while driving is up a staggering 38% from pre-shut down numbers. Speeding and hard braking have both increased by around 25% as well.

 

Next City: A “V-Shaped Recovery” for Driving? As States and Cities reopen, many people are opting to drive instead of use public transit, leading to a steep uptick in vehicle miles traveled. Transit agencies are working to restore service despite falling ridership so that those that need to use transit can properly social distance while commuting and accessing essential services.
