TAKE ACTION: SAY “NO” TO NEW FOSSIL GAS AT INDEPENDENCE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
Philadelphia Gas Works, the City’s municipally-owned utility, is attempting to aggressively expand its footprint by installing new fossil gas plants in some of our City’s most iconic buildings. The National Park Service alone is considering switching from steam power to gas at 20 buildings, including Independence Hall. The conversion to gas would release significant pollution into the surrounding neighborhood, require excavation of city streets, and lock in decades of additional emissions. Cleaner, affordable options are available, and we must urge the National Park Service to change course.
Residents need to voice their opposition before these projects go through. The health and environmental impacts of these new plants cannot be underestimated. Fossil-fuel-burning heating and exhaust stacks at Independence National Historic Park will emit 1,500 tons of carbon emissions into the air we breathe every year for the next 30 years. We need the National Park Service to step up and say “NO” to new, unregulated gas plants in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.
