MOM’s Organic Market’s New Abington Store

If you haven’t already heard, longtime Clean Air partner MOM’s Organic Market opened a new store in Abington, PA last month on September 4th.

MOM’s Abington features a 100% certified organic produce section, sustainable proteins (crickets), Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified clothing, backyard beekeeping tools, an extensive bulk goods section, and so much more. MOM’s gives preference to organic items and takes sustainable farming practices, and fair labor into consideration when sourcing all of their products. This new store also offers free electric car chargers and a recycling center that accepts compost, used shoes, eyeglasses, batteries, and other hard to recycle items.

If that’s not enough, in the very near future the new store will be installing a 265 kilowatt rooftop solar array. That’s their biggest solar roof project yet! This will be their 4th store with a solar rooftop and their 5th solar project including the MOM’s Solar Farm in Kingsville, MD. The Abington solar project will make an enormous difference, generating approximately 40% of the stores’ energy needs, which is amazing!

As a longtime partner, we’re always impressed by MOM’s commitment to the environment. If you’re not familiar with their accomplishments, some of MOM’s sustainability initiatives include:

  • The “Plastic Surgery” Campaign in 2010, when MOM’s stopped selling plastic water bottles and started a comprehensive effort to cut single-use plastic in all departments.
  • The “Save the Dandelion” Campaign, an annual event to raise awareness of the toxic pesticides and herbicides used in conventional lawn care.
  • Recycling drives for denim, holiday lights, eyeglasses, and more.
  •  Solar rooftops on several stores as well as a 1.5-megawatt off-site solar farm in Kingsville, Maryland, which generates roughly 14% of total power needs for all stores. To offset more electrical usage, the company also purchases Wind Power Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).
  • Offsetting the carbon emissions of all customer’s trips to and from stores. In 2019 alone, MOM’s offset the round trips of 6,039,344 customers to and from MOM’s stores!

Clean Air Council is proud to work with MOM’s Organic Market and is excited to see their continued growth include a strong, ongoing commitment to sustainability. If you live in the Abington area, we strongly recommend that you check out this new MOM’s location. Do yourself a favor and remember to bring those old batteries you’ve been waiting to recycle.
